Summary
The self psychological usage of the term "empathy" has been described by analysts of the British Kleinian school as simply one form of projective identification. This paper examines the concepts of empathy and projective identification and attempts to locate areas where they coincide and where they differ. The clinical implications are considered and case studies are provided.
