The course will elucidate the basic principles of Focal Psychotherapy as originally conceived by Michael Balint and his collaborators and was subsequently described by Balint, M., Ornstein, P.H., and Balint, E. Balint’s approach was further elaborated by us from a self psychological perspective.

Our emphasis will be clinical. The choice of a focus (or alternative foci) will be at the center of our considerations and the interpretive approach will be described and illustrated with detailed clinical interchanges and video-taped clinical samples. We shall demonstrate that Balint’s original hope that brief treatment will not have to sacrifice "depth" is enhanced by a focus whose choice is guided by self psychology.
