The 21st Annual International Conference on The Psychology of The Self will be held at the Hotel Del Coronado on the island of Coronado in San Diego, California, October 22-25, 1998. This magnificent historical landmark is a year-round tourist attraction renowned for its perfect sand beach, championship tennis courts, olympic size swimming pool, full service spa and luxurious shopping arcade. The "Del" was featured as the central location in Billy Wilders classic film Some Like It Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Joe E. Brown. The world famous San Diego Zoo and beautiful Balboa Park are located just 15 minutes from the hotel.
The conference will offer three major panels. The first will address Attachment Theory and Self Psychology. The second panel will consider Self Psychological Approaches to Trauma and Dissociation. The third panel will examine the Reconceptualization of Therapeutic Action, featuring a clinical vignette considered from the perspective of three major theoretical positions. Among the presenters will be Bernard Brandchaft, Estelle Shane, Morton Shane and Mary Gales; Bessel van der Kolk, Amy Eldridge and Anne Groves; and Allen Siegel, Howard Bacal, Frank Lachmann and Marian Tolpin. The Kohut Memorial Lecturer is Robert Stolorow, who will speak on Kohut and Contextualization. In addition, numerous paper and workshop sessions will elaborate on the Conference theme: Self Psychology Integrating and Evolving.
The Pre-Conference Program continues to expand with a workshop on Child Therapy from multiple Self Psychological perspectives, in addition to separate courses on Group Therapy, Child Therapy, and Marital and Family Therapy, all from a Self Psychological point of view. Once again, we will offer an Introductory Workshop for beginners in Self Psychology, presented by Arthur Malin and Sanford Shapiro. The Advanced Course will feature theoretical presentations on five different Self Psychology Perspectives, presented by George Atwood, Howard Bacal, James Fosshage, Paul Ornstein and Morton Shane, with representatives from each of these perspectives included in the case presentations the following morning.
The conference has been organized to facilitate maximum opportunity for questions, comments, and dialogue between audience and presenters, allowing clinicians at all levels to engage in an extensive variety of topics important to the field. Following two of the three panels there will be post-panel discussions led by leading contributors in Self Psychology side-by-side with fresh, new clinicians interested in a Self Psychological approach. The paper and workshop sessions continue these interactions among professionals of varying degrees of experience in Self Psychological clinical work. We cordially invite you to be a part of this exciting program which will take place in San Diego, Americas Finest City.
