Introduction

The conference was structured around four major panels. Each of these panels addressed the theme of Reconceptualizing the Clinical Experience from a different perspective: Panel I from the standpoint of the self-selfobject matrix; Panel II from the standpoint of intersubjectivity; Panel III from the standpoint of motivational systems and affect theory. The fourth panel, summarized and discussed here, included representatives of each of these standpoints and focused on integration: Is it possible or desirable?

Below are links to Alan Kindler's summaries of the position statements of the panelists, the 3-minute replies each panelist then was allowed, and the open discussion between the panelists and the audience. Alan Kindler was the chair of Panel IV, which also included Paul Ornstein, Robert Stolorow, and Joe Lichtenberg. These insightful and concise reviews are drawn from and reviewed by the authors and discussants on the panel. They offer one of the most comprehensive overviews available anywhere of contemporary thinking in the contributions of Heinz Kohut to psychoanalysis.
