Dear Colleagues:
The 20th Annual International Conference on The Psychology of The Self will be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Chicago, November 13-16, 1997. The hotel is located at the corner of State Street and West Wacker Drive overlooking the Chicago River. It is close to Chicago's exciting downtown and the River North area. These areas are known for their wonderful shopping, theaters, museums and restaurants.
The conference will offer three major panels. The first will address Narcissistic Behavior Disorders, which include eating, gambling, drug and alcohol problems, and some sexual behaviors. A second panel will consider our revised understanding of Boundaries in the light of the selfobject concept. The third major panel will examine a Clinical Vignette from the perspective of three major theoretical positions: Intersubjectivity, the Self-Selfobject Matrix and Motivational Systems and Affect Theory. Among the presenters will be Morton and Estelle Shane, Arnold Goldberg, Robert Stolorow, Paul Ornstein and James Fosshage. During the Kohut Memorial Lecture, Charles Strozier will discuss his soon-to-be-published biography of Heinz Kohut. In addition, numerous paper and workshop sessions will offer a highly stimulating experience at the cutting edge of Self Psychology.
The Pre-Conference continues to expand with courses in Couples and Family Therapy, Brief Psychotherapy and Child Treatment, all from a self psychological point of view. We will again offer an Introductory Course for beginners in Self Psychology. In the Advanced Course, Frank Lachmann will present his paper, Aggression: Reactive and Transformed, and Master Classes with well-known Self Psychologists will provide an opportunity to discuss individual case material in a small group format.
Paper and workshop sessions will be organized to provide an extended opportunity for questions, comments and dialogue between the audience and presenters. Clinicians at all levels will find something engaging in the extensive variety of topics. Well-known leaders in the field will present side-by-side with bright new faces. All of this will occur in the sophisticated setting of one of America's most beautiful cities. This is a meeting not to be missed!
